What is MagSafe and how does it work?
MagSafe is a magnetic system that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020. It works on all iPhones from the 12 to the 17 Pro Max. The magnetic ring on the back of the phone attaches to MagSafe chargers, wallets, car mounts and other accessories. Key benefits: fast wireless charging at 15W (iPhone 12–14), up to 25W (iPhone 15 and later with a 30W+ charger) and perfect coil alignment.
Watch out for the differences between Qi, MagSafe and Qi2
Qi is the general wireless charging standard (around 7.5W on iPhone). MagSafe is Apple's proprietary version with magnets and faster charging. Qi2 is a new open standard (since 2023) that adopts MagSafe's magnets and is becoming a more affordable alternative. A charger labelled 'MagSafe certified' is more expensive but charges at full power.
MagSafe chargers — what to buy:
- Apple MagSafe Charger — the puck costs around 1,290 Kč. Charges at 15–25W (with a 30W+ adapter).
- Belkin BoostCharge Pro 15W — a quality MagSafe certified alternative for around 1,100 Kč.
- Anker MagGo 3-in-1 — charges an iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch simultaneously. Great for a nightstand.
- Cheap Qi2 chargers from brands like UGREEN and ESR — they work, but at 15W instead of 25W.
MagSafe wallet — useful, but with a catch
A magnetic wallet on the back of an iPhone holds 3 payment cards plus a driving licence. Apple's version costs around 1,800 Kč, with alternatives from 600 Kč. It works great, but shielding against electronic card skimming (RFID) is weak on some cheap variants — always check the specification. The Apple wallet combined with Find My lets you track the wallet's location.
Car mounts — our recommendation
A MagSafe car mount is one of the best investments. The Belkin Car Vent Mount Pro (around 1,600 Kč) holds even the heaviest iPhone Pro Max without wobbling and also offers wireless charging. Cheaper options from 600 Kč work without charging. Note: for an iPhone Pro Max with a heavy case, strong magnetisation is important — buy only MagSafe certified mounts.
Charging stands — two types
1) MagSafe stand (approx. 1,200–2,500 Kč) — holds the iPhone in portrait or landscape, ideal for a kitchen counter or nightstand. 2) MagSafe Duo / Trio (from 2,800 Kč) — charges an iPhone plus AirPods, or even an Apple Watch, at the same time. Suitable for users of the whole ecosystem.
Watch out — what MagSafe CANNOT do:
- Doesn't work through thick metal cases (only through plastic, silicone, leather or glass).
- An iPhone in a case without MagSafe magnets holds weakly or not at all.
- Charging the Apple Watch — that's a different system; a MagSafe puck doesn't charge a Watch.
- Only works on the iPhone 12 and later. The iPhone 11 and earlier don't have MagSafe.
