iPhone Pro vs. Pro Max — what's the real difference?
Pro Max = a larger display and a bigger battery than the Pro, and hence also more weight. The camera difference depends on the generation: on the iPhone 15, the Pro Max has a longer zoom (5x vs. 3x on the Pro); the iPhone 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max and the 17 Pro / 17 Pro Max both share the same camera system. You'll find the exact screen sizes and zoom levels by generation in the table below. If you want the largest format and the longest battery life, go for the Pro Max; otherwise the Pro is enough.

Same chip, same design — so where's the difference?
Apple unifies the specs across its Pro models — the same chip, the same titanium/aluminium frame, the same features. The main differences between the Pro and Pro Max come down to three things: display size, battery life, and in some generations, the telephoto lens. The price difference in pre-owned condition is 4,000-6,000 Kč.
What the Pro Max offers extra:
- A larger display (6.7"-6.9" vs. 6.1"-6.3" on the Pro).
- Longer battery life (roughly 3-5 hours more).
- Larger camera sensors (on some generations).
- Higher tetraprism zoom — the iPhone 15 Pro Max had 5× telephoto, the Pro only 3x.
- More weight (roughly 220-240g vs. 190-200g).
Specific differences by generation
| Generation | Pro vs. Pro Max — key difference |
|---|---|
| iPhone 13 Pro | 6.1" 3× zoom · 6.7" 3× zoom |
| iPhone 14 Pro | 6.1" 3× zoom · 6.7" 3× zoom |
| iPhone 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max | 15 Pro: 6.1" and 3× optical zoom · 15 Pro Max: 6.7" and 5× zoom |
| iPhone 16 Pro | 6.3" 5× zoom · 6.9" 5× zoom |
| iPhone 17 Pro | 6.3" · 48MP 4× telephoto lens, 8× zoom at optical quality · 17 Pro Max: 6.9" with the same camera system |
iPhone 15 Pro Max — an exception worth knowing
With the iPhone 15 generation, the Pro Max adds a longer telephoto lens: 5x instead of 3x on the Pro. The 15 Pro has a 3× optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max brought a 5× tetraprism zoom (120mm equivalent). If you're considering the 15 Pro for the zoom — definitely pay extra for the Pro Max, it's one of the few cases where the larger model isn't just 'a bigger screen'.
iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro — Apple unified the zoom
On the iPhone 16 Pro, even the smaller Pro has a 5× tetraprism zoom, and on the 17 Pro series both models share the same 48MP 4× telephoto lens with 8× zoom at optical quality. The difference between the Pro and Pro Max is therefore mainly display size and battery life. If you don't need the largest format and longer battery life, you'll save money by buying the Pro (see the current price difference in our range).
Choose the Pro if:
- You want an iPhone that fits comfortably in your hand and pocket.
- Phone weight matters to you (around 30g lighter).
- A battery that lasts a full day is enough (Pro models typically last 14-17 hours of video).
- You want to save 4,000-5,000 Kč.
Choose the Pro Max if:
- You watch a lot of video, play games or work with spreadsheets — the larger display comes in handy.
- You travel and need longer battery life.
- You want the iPhone 15 Pro Max for its 5× zoom (on the 16 and 17 Pro, both models already share the same telephoto lens).
- The extra weight doesn't bother you.
Our tip
If you're torn, we recommend visiting a store in person and holding both models — the difference between 6.3" and 6.9" is significant in practice. At iLoveServis you can try all our pre-owned Pro and Pro Max models from the iPhone 13 upwards at selected stores.
